Good Painting Tutorials

Great book on watercolour painting. Excellent step by step visuals for visual learners. It took a little longer to arrive than I had expected, but thanks for the good communication letting me know it was still on the way. Would buy again, for sure.

This is not how I want to paint moving water

I bought this book based on the cover illustration and the one existing review at the time I purchased the book. While evaluation of art and technique is subjective, my sense is that the author is considerably more skilled in painting still water than moving water, such as a seascape. His seacape watercolors seems to have been accomplished in a way that conveys mood but not competency in terms of technique to portray a realistic seacape (the fluidity and rolling of water). My suggestion is that one would be MUCH better served by getting a copy of "The Watercolorist's Essential Notebook- Landscapes" by Gordon MacKenzie (the best watercolor book I have) and looking at the section "Landscape Elements- Water,Sky and Land" beginning on page 59. Now THAT is how to paint water!

Disappointment

How much do you dislike cliffhangers? Answering that will lead you to either buying this book or walking away. Pity I didn't need the negative reviews. Reads like something that was thrown together and published as a stop to those loyal readers waiting for Kostya and or Alexi. Give this one a by.

Very disappointed :( It was so short and everything happened so fast that you had no chance to even get to know the characters or fall in love with them. I really hope "Kostya" is not like this!!! :(

This is a good read, however I'd already read it! Can't help but feel cheated when you pay for a book twice. When you read daily it's impossible to recall all past books. So if you've read rockers after dark you already own this book. If not enjoy because it's fantastic!

Kingdom Citizenship

This book is definitely a eye opening experience to read. I love the various illustrations the author gives about kingdoms . One thing I thought very interesting was about the "fall." He asks us what did we really lose in the "fall." I never really thought about that as bring significant to the kingdom. What didAdam and Eve fall from? They did the one thing they were told not to do. They fell from dominion and therefore Adam was no longer getting direction from God. I wonder how many of us have stopped listening to God? Who are we getting our direction from?

It is interesting to read in the book that the author said "it is a tragedy that we have produced a religion called Christianity . Jesus did not invent such a thing."' What Jesus did do though was to come to earth "to establish an outpost of the Kingdom of Heaven." I understand more clearly when God said, " let them have dominion." He assigned us to manage what He had created . As we look around we can see that we are very much lacking in the area of taking care of what He created.

The book is very thought provoking and takes you into a deeper place in His word. The illustrations the author gives us helps to visualize what the Kingdom is and how we can take back what has been assigned to us. He is very direct and doesn't sugar coat anything. I like to read a book that gives me things to think about and take me deeper into the Word. When he said, "Some need to sell their loyalty to the pastor they love so much but who isn't preaching about the Kingdom", I stopped and re read that sentence. What he is saying is we need to be careful who we are listening to and making sure we are being taught what the bible says.

There is a great story in the book about an elderly couple who won a cruise. They were not wealthy and didn't understand what they had won. They packed their small belongings and headed to their cabin. It was a beautiful and luxurious room. They sat there day after day, eating crackers and juice but never leaving the room. On the ninth day, the captain became concerned . He had not seen them leave their room, they never came to dine or go to the shows. When he went to the room, he asked them why they had not partaken in any if the things the ship offered . They said they couldn't afford it. What the captain explained must have astounded them. The tickets they had were to enjoy everything the ship had to offer free of charge. The story was very vivid in what it meant. We lack knowledge, so we don't get the full benefits of the Kingdom.

Thank you for a book that will be a benefit to me as well as others in explaining the meaning of Kingdom Citizenship. The book is well written and has very good examples by using stories from the bible and scriptures to clearly relay his message. I encourage readers to take their time reading this powerful book and looking at the Kingdom as part of our inheritance that we need to take care of.

This is Dr. Munroe's crowning work!

This is a crowning work of explaining the Kingdom of God! I've read several of Dr. Munroe's books and I sincerely believe that he has nailed it, for lack of a better way of explaining it. Dr. Munroe brings clarity to an otherwise very confusing 66 books of the bible. The Kingdom message is very obvious for a serious bible reader. It was sad to hear of the jet crash that caused him to transition from the earth. But it was this same event that led me to listening to some of his sermons and reading some of his books. Now, I have read several of his books and this book is, in my opinion, is his crowning work. God Bless his son and daughter as they continue to carry on his legacy, I enjoy listening to them speak about receiving the baton and carrying on their father's work. This book will totally change your perspective on religion and help you to understand that it was never God's plan to form or found a religion. His ultimate plan was that we would all be citizens of his Kingdom and colonize the earth with the Kingdom of Heaven's culture!

Eye opening

While reading this book I became sad knowing that this would be his last book. I am grateful for the opportunity to read and review this great book. I know that I will be rectifying this by finding his other works.
This book was very intriguing. You know the feeling when you think you already know the story and find out you were wrong? Yep, that's how I felt after reading this book. Dr Munroe explains that "we have produced a religion called Christianity". He goes on to explain that God sent his son Jesus to earth to help us "establish an outpost of the Kingdom of Heaven". God has assigned us to manage earth for him because he created it. He explains that we have not done a very good job of managing. Our world is falling apart around us, war, poverty, abuse, killings when will it stop??? We need to wake up and open our eyes to what God has given us and prepare for citizenship into the Kingdom of Heaven. We can't just be "Sunday believers" like Dr Monroe states in a chapter. We need to help others.
There are two worlds that contend with each other and they are kingdoms. One is the kingdom of darkness and the other is the Kingdom of Light. Satan is the darkness and God is the Light. There are some out there that we need to be careful listening too because they are wolves in sheeps clothing. Listen to God and the scriptures he has given us and our path to citizenship will be full of love and peace.
I loved this book and how easy it was to follow. Each chapter is filled with examples, stories, and scriptures from the bible. This book has a powerful message and is well written.

Truly a Journey into the Deaf World

I bought this book for my Deaf Culture class and I am very glad that this was required reading. Although I have been taking ASL classes for 10 years and have been involved in the Deaf community I still found this book to be very eyeopening.

I highly recommend this book to everyone. It is well written with good flow and gives insight to the Deaf perspective.

No Passport Required

This book is the only passport you will need to travel to the heretofore not-very-well-if-ever-at-all understood Deaf-World. Well written, "Journey into the Deaf-World" is quite exhaustive in its coverage of the the life and times of Deaf people in America. From culture to education and everywhere in between, "Journey" is as much enlightening as it is enraging. You will find yourself newly aware of sad injustices and lack of understanding the confront the the Deaf community at every turn.

While not always an easy read, one must give credit to the authors for making what could have been a cumbersome text into a scholarly-yet-accessible book. Especially enjoyable are the examples of real-life situations that Deaf people encounter. For instance, when the sections on education are covered, "Journey" examines the different methods of attack used by various educational professionals over the years, effectively giving a well-rounded picture of the educational scene from the Deaf perspective. But when it gives a series of mock narratives of the typical experience of a Deaf child in each of these methods of teaching, the reader is able to experience what can only be described as true enlightenment.

Don't be intimidated by the book's thickness. If you have any tie to the Deaf-World,or even just a passing interest, "Journey" will take you for a fast-paced ride you'll not soon forget.

Review: Virtue 2: Sweetest Venom

Sweetest Venom by Mia Asher is the second and final book in her Virtue series. This picks up with the cliffhanger from book one, Easy Virtue and rolls right through your expectations and pre-conceived notions. In this book we get a little more perspective as a select few chapters were told from Ronan and Lawrence's POV's. It was painful and enlightening. This duology is a journey. One that each reader must make on their own. I highly recommend avoiding any spoilers about where this book goes but to each their own. I will not provide any spoilers in this review.

This book seemed to speed along there at the very end, everything happened so fast. I was a little surprised by how fast but I'm appreciating the journey it took to get there and I think that was the author's goal. The journey not the destination. Some stories take you far past the happy ever after moment when you *could* envision them walking off into the sunset and that's great but sometimes it is perfectly ok to end it at the HEA moment and leave the rest up to your own imagination (OR ANOTHER BOOK hint hint). This second book was wholeheartedly about the journey. Not just Blaire's but also Ronan and Lawrence's journey through the mess they made in book one.

Long story short ... I absolutely adored this book.

It made me cry in places and I'm either getting soft or just finding books the past month or so that make me cry because I don't cry at books, rarely hardly ever and it's been nearly all the past few I've read.

Heartbreaking

Another roller coaster of emotions with Sweetest Venom. I screamed, I cried, my heart tore in a millions pieces, I smiled a little, I cried more...this is an intense love triangle story. But it is amazing. You love Blaire, you hate Blaire, you sympathize with Blaire, you wanna punch Blaire...in this book, your heart breaks for Law & Ronan...2 men falling for 1 woman and she loves them both in her twisted way, yet she can't stop hurting both of them. I know it sounds terrible, but honestly, this book is amazing. Even though it did not give me the ending I wanted, personally, it was an incredible journey that I wish I could take again.

Revenge and love

This book has so many good twists and turns that made me anticipate what's going to happen next. So much heartache was felt in this book along with guessing will it be a happily ever after at the end. Blaire had a hard time changing who and what she is but with her perseverance, eventually gained what she wants in her life. Did we really know what the definition of love is? I think if two people are meant for each other, they will create their own definition of love despite of all the obstacles that they have to face in their lives.

This book is the proceedings of the international conference THICCAPFA7 that was titled “New Approaches to the Analysis of Large-Scale Business and E- nomic Data,” held in Tokyo, March 1–5, 2009. The letters THIC denote the Tokyo Tech (Tokyo Institute of Technology)–Hitotsubashi Interdisciplinary Conference. The conference series, titled APFA (Applications of Physics in Financial Analysis), focuses on the analysis of large-scale economic data. It has traditionally brought physicists and economists together to exchange viewpoints and experience (APFA1 in Dublin 1999, APFA2 in Liege ` 2000, APFA3 in London 2001, APFA4 in Warsaw 2003, APFA5 in Torino 2006, and APFA6 in Lisbon 2007). The aim of the conf- ence is to establish fundamental analytical techniques and data collection methods, taking into account the results from a variety of academic disciplines.

A Russian Apocalyptic Classic

Aleksandr Belyaev’s RULER OF THE WORLD (1929), newly translated by Maria K, is a fun read. But it is also a look at a whole school of science fiction that emerged in Europe after World War I and can be characterized as apocalyptic sf.
An “apocalyptic” work is formally defined as a prophetic vision, like the Revelation of St. John in the New Testament. But its connotation, from that same book, is more specific: a vision of ultimate disaster – of wars and plagues and pestilences that signal the end of the world. It is no accident that the same traumatic war that produced Vicente Blasco Ibanez’ The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse (1916) also led to apocalyptic visions of mass upheavals and destruction in science fiction.
A new image of the Mad Scientist emerged. No longer a Frankenstein or Dr. Moreau, pursuing his research in back streets or on remote islands, he was now a megalomaniac using science as a means to achieve world power, or at least allying himself with forces which so used it. Destructive rays and atomic energy were staples of the apocalyptic school, but so was scientifically-based mind control/
Ludwig Shtirner in THE RULER OF THE WORLD (1929), is a latter-day Svengali, but he doesn’t rely on mere charisma and he isn’t looking for just a Trilby. A “Napoleon Wannabe” (the translation is anachronistic, but you get the point!), he seeks to rule the world, and he has the mind-control technology to do just that – first imposing his will on a banker and, after that banker’s death, taking effective control of first the bank and before long the entire economy of Germany. Police and military attacks on his headquarters are fruitless; the attackers’ minds are simply taken over.
One prophetic detail: France, alarmed that it may be next on Shtirner’s list, calls on America to attack his headquarters with drones, which can’t be taken over. That attack fails only because the drones are early models that can’t be directed from afar and are blown off course. Meanwhile, a duel of wits and technology unfolds between Shtirner and Kachinsky – a Russian electronic telepathy expert recruited by the government who comes up with the idea of protective suits to shield the forces of law and order from mind control). But the finale isn’t what you expect; Belyaev always liked to avoid the obvious in his sf, and Ruler of the World is no exception. Maria’s translation captures both the flow and the spirit of the story.

brilliant fictional novella

How much I enjoyed the book: 9/10
How good the book was: 9/10

Where to begin with Last Off... If I had read the entire book in one sitting, I would have been bawling by the end. Fortunately for me, I read the book over two days and this wasn't the case.

The overall plot of the novella remains true to the disaster and so the ending of Last Off is tragic. Yet my brain did not manage to compute this right away and so I found myself still hoping for a happy ending. Of course I was left devastated when the metaphorical faeces eventually hit the fan. Or in this case, when the ship hit the iceberg.

We aren't given much information about the characters but I developed an immediate liking for them. All four stowaways are boys, allowing them to form the foundations of what could have been a great friendship.

The boys disappear one at a time and I can't tell you how frustrated that made me! Particularly since the ending only tells us about one out of the four boys! As a casual reader I wish we'd been given more details, but as a literature student I can appreciate the fact that my exact need for detail is what the family of the passengers on The Titanic had felt after hearing the news. So I've chosen to see this as excellent writing technique rather than a frustrating missing feature.

Last Off reminds me somewhat of Night of the Purple Moon. Both books were written extremely well in terms of characters, pacing, story line and both books feature children/young adults as the protagonists. Whilst I respect both writers and cannot fault their writing, the abundance of tragedy in both books prevents me from loving their work.

So yes it was a brilliant book; there's no denying it. On the other hand, I can't help but feel that by the end of my reading, some part of my soul was suddenly taken from me, leaving me with an empty feeling.

Last Off definitely leaves you with a lasting impression.

Loved this story

I have been fascinated by the Titanic and all stories pertaining to her since I was a small child. Last Off tells the tale of four young boys who stowaway in the very bowels of the supposedly unsinkable ship. Paddy from Belfast, Hugh from London, French-born Emile who intends to become rich in America, and an initially silent boy they believe to be mute until he finally speaks and reveals himself to be German. The boys begin to relate their individual stories of how they came to be tucked away in the bottom of the ship, and their hopes and dreams for the future that waited them in America. They go to bed one night well fed and full of hope, and wake up to a world gone dark and upside down. What happens next is the stuff of both legends and history books, and any Titanicphile (not sure if that's a word but I have made it so) will find themselves unable to put this book down until the last page has been devoured.

I was very impressed with the skillful way the author developed the camaraderie between the boys in the short time they were together. The dialogue is realistic and believable, and despite the ultimate tragic nature of all stories Titanic this one had its humorous moments as well as its heartbreak, and I am really happy to have added it to my collection. I received a copy of this one in exchange for an honest review, but will be buying the paperback to add to the bookshelf. It really is an excellent story.

Nice historical fiction about the sinking of the Titanic

I love historical fiction, and also really enjoy stories about the Titanic, so I was excited to read Laughton Chandler's novella, Last Off. Last Off is about four young teen boys who are stowaways on the Titanic.

Hugh seemed to be the main character (in my opinion), but the reader gets to know all four boys fairly well. I appreciated the boys' unique histories, and enjoyed reading about how each came to be a stowaway on the Titanic. I liked the characters , and found myself quite invested in the outcome of the story.

Last Off is a good length for a novella: it took me just over an hour to read it, and I have no complaints about the length of the book. I usually bemoan the brevity of most novellas, but I was completely satisfied with this story. Chandler made the story just the right length. Last Off has quite a detailed plot which was full of emotion.

While I found myself irrationally wishing for a happy ending (all the while knowing how a story about the Titanic was bound to end), I thought the ending to Last Off was perfectly suited to the story. Anything else would have felt inauthentic.

I liked the twist about the actual sinking of the ship. I was taken by surprise (I love it when that happens) and thought Chandler's handling of that subject made the story quite interesting.

My one complaint about Last Off is that I felt sort of disconnected from the characters. I think this is mainly due to the fact that the book is a third-person narrative. I always find myself not as connected with the characters when reading a third-person POV.

Overall, I did really enjoy Last Off and would recommend it to fans of historical fiction and people who are interested in reading about the Titanic.
