About the Author
Alex Dugdale was until recently Head of Division of Veterinary Anaesthesia at the University of Liverpool, UK, and is currently studying for a PhD. She holds the RCVS Diploma in Veterinary Anaesthesia and the ECVAA Diploma in Veterinary Anaesthesia, as well as the PGCert (Learning and Teaching in Higher Education). She has over 10 years’ experience of teaching veterinary anaesthesia.

DON'T BUY THIS BOOK FROM "Print Books USA"

I very recently bought a similar book from "Print Books USA." They clearly give you the impression that they are a USA based company, but when the book is shipped to you it arrives from New Delhi, India (that should tell you something right there). When I first saw that I had a package arriving from Fedex Express, New Delhi, I was a bit nonplussed. But, I quickly determined it was the book.

When the package arrived, it was clean and undamaged. No bends, creases or marks on the package itself. I breathed a sigh of relief when I saw this because I am so used to getting beaten up books from the USPS through Amazon, where you can immediately tell from the package the book is a goner.

To be clear, I bought the book as a new book, paid the new book price, just as this one. When I opened the package, the book was covered in dirt and grime. Black dirt. It had a massive crease, not just on the cover, but one that penetrated EVERY single page in the book, along the vertical axis of the book. As if someone had stuck it in a vise and clamped it good. Every page in the book was creased, not just in one spot, but perhaps 10 or 20 spots on each page, suggesting that it had been someone's school textbook. It had been well-read. Over and over. Dirt on the inside pages. ABSOLUTELY NO DOUBT THAT IT WAS A HIGHLY USED BOOK.

I contacted the seller and he offered a refund. It never appeared. I told the seller the same spiel, but he still insisted that it was delivery damage. Not possible. Physically impossible. If the package is unblemished, then the only way to damage the book without damaging the package is if you happen to know the "Five Fingers of Death Kung Fu Technique," and you use it on the book.

I cannot say that my story is being repeated in all of their bookselling, but if you receive an obvious used book and the seller obviously tries to cover it up and lies about it, then I don't think that bodes well for their business ethos. They have the appearance of someone that is selling used books for new. I have told Amazon about this, but they have done nothing. You can hardly blame a multibillion megacompany like Amazon for not bothering with swatting gnats like this. So, I leave it to you good people to help with the swatting.

Between 1926 and 1929, thousands of Mexicans fought and died in an attempt to overthrow the government of their country. They were the Cristeros, so called because of their battle cry, �Viva Cristo Rey!—Long Live Christ the King! The Cristero rebellion and the church-state conflict remain one of the most controversial subjects in Mexican history, and much of the writing on it is emotional polemic. David C. Bailey, basing his study on the most important published and unpublished sources available, strikes a balance between objective reporting and analysis. This book depicts a national calamity in which sincere people followed their convictions to often tragic ends.

The Cristero rebellion climaxed a century of animosity between the Catholic church and the Mexican state, and this background is briefly summarized here. With the coming of the 1910 revolution the hostility intensified. The revolutionists sought to impose severe limitations on the Church, and Catholic anti-revolutionary militancy grew apace. When the government in 1926 decreed strict enforcement of anticlerical legislation, matters reached a crisis. Church authorities suspended public worship throughout Mexico, and Catholics in various parts of the country rose up in arms. There followed almost three years of indecisive guerrilla warfare marked by brutal excesses on both sides. Bailey describes the armed struggle in broad outline but concentrates on the political and diplomatic maneuvering that ultimately decided the issue.

A de facto settlement was brought about in 1929, based on the government’s pledge to allow the Church to perform its spiritual offices under its own internal discipline. The pact was arranged mainly through the intercession of U.S. Ambassador Dwight Morrow. His role in the conflict, as well as that of other Americans who decisively influenced the course of events, receives detailed attention in the study. The position of the Vatican during the conflict and its role in the settlement are also examined in detail.

With the 1929 settlement the clergy returned to the churches, whereupon the Cristeros lost public support and the rebellion collapsed. The spirit of the settlement soon evaporated, more strife followed, and only after another decade did permanent religious peace come to Mexico.

Excellent Work -- A Primer on the Cristero Rebellion

Author Baily has done an excellent job of covering the Cristero Rebellion in Mexico from 1926 to 1929 without getting bogged down in the weedy details. In particular he covers the role of the U.S., aid from the American Knights of Columbo to the Cristeros, and the actions by American Ambassador Morrow in bringing about an agreement between the Vatican and the Jacobin Mexican government that ended the war. The text of the agreement from 1929 is included in this work.

This was the author's doctoral dissertation now published in book form, and concentrates mainly on the political actions taken by all of the parties. It adds material to Meyer's "The Cristero Rebellion", generally considered to be the definitive work on the subject. However, Bailey's book is an easier read, and gives a shorter yet thorough presentation of the historical factors leading to the rebellion. Readers are invited to read my review of Jean Meyer's work, and I would recommend purchasing both books to cover the ground. There is less duplication than one might expect.

The Sorrow and the Shame

The history of Mexico is written in sorrow and blood. La Cristiada is a continuance of this sad tradition. Like the previous Mexican Revolution of 1911, it is very complex, with shifting sides, motivations wrapped in confusion, selfishness and betrayal. You really need a program to keep all the players straight. In writing Viva Cristo Rey! David Bailey has done a yeoman job of trying to tell this story with an admirable sense of coherence. This is a story of the continuing struggle for religious freedom, based upon saving the Catholic church, faith and freedom of worship. Originally, based upon the persecution of the church and murder and torture of it's priests, the revolutionaries sought help from the Church hierarchy and belatedly expanded their mission to encompass religious freedom as a basic cause in order to gain foreign support and money. It is a story of heroism, betrayal, self interest, ending in more tragedy and death for the Mexican people. It is also a story of the United States, it's fear of Catholicism, and seeking of self interest in a political, not moral sense.The revolutions timing in relation to what was happening in the US was critical, and the American influence and power plays had tremendous effect on the outcome. In that sense it is alsoa tale of American history . In the end, however La Cristiada did succeed in the greater goal of restoring their right to worship and put a halt to the ongoing persecution of religion by the revolutionary, atheistic forces of the ruling parties. This is NOT a movie tie in. It does not center around the battlefield, although it is covered in it's place. This is a comprehensive telling of the entire story and a worthy history to be read and an important story to spread to those who need hearing it. Separation of church and state has to be balanced with the separation of State from Church as well.

Amazing!

This book will revolutionise any misconceptions about food, diet and digestion and enlighten many to the cause and remedy of disease.Its concepts are well laid out, very readable, very practical, authorative and easy to apply. I am curently studying Naturopathy and find it a valuable reference for study and personal application, it is so well communicated and not lacking in authentic up to date clinical and scientific validation of principles vital to 'nature cure'. It presents a modern holistic system of approaching clinical nutrition. It is truelly a fundamental first volume.

Important Read For Everyone

Dr. Loomis explains how we slow down producing digestive enzymes as we age. Unless you live on a farm and eat your food out of the field, food doesn't give you what you need to digest carbs, fats and proteins. I have since started Loomis enzymes and they have helped me with digestion. This is a very informative book that explains the whole process of digestion and what you need to know to stay healthy.

Fantastic, easy to understand book. It puts digestion in a whole new light. The text was easy to read, diagrams were helpful, lists are easy to find, and the overall feel of the book is top notch.

Divorce or Misery not the only options.

This is one of many books available by Bob & Charlyne Steinkamp of Rejoice Marriage Ministries. They walked a road seen by too many through separation and divorce but discovered hope in Christ to heal a hurting and dead marriage.
Their openness and sound biblical teachings have helped many, including me, to stand for a healed marriage alone, in spite of everyone including my spouse urging me to "get on with my life".
This book will bless anyone looking for hope where it seems none can be found.

whens book 3 coming out!?

This book is great. Even though its the second book i think it could easily be the first of the series. Also you don't have to read the first book to understand what this one is about.

The book is exciting and I even caught myself smiling a few times. There are a few editing errors where it says he instead of she or something on those lines but it doesn't take but a second to figure out what its suppose to say.. there are other errors though that make you do a double take. Like when they are telling her about the farm she asks about the Termaines that took them in with out them telling her their names. Then there is a scene where Glenna locks Joe out of the bathroom he goes and uses the other bathroom to shower and then it says Leland pauses outside the bathroom and listens to them talk... ok so which it is? haha.

Something's don't seem to match the first book. In the first book they don't know that they share a mate except that it had also happened to Joe and Leland. In this book they said their parents had the same problem and it tore them apart and got them killed. Nothing except that they were killed was in the first book.

Dominant Shifters GRRREAT!.

I usually don't read this type of Erotica but being a fan of Leah Brooke I took a chance years ago and read Alphas Mate and loved it. Of course I read the first Panthers book hoping in would be like Alphas but while I liked it is was just ok rating it 3 stars. So when this book came out amonth ago I had my doubts if I wanted to even try again. However, after reading the sample for Panthers' Pride I was hooked.

Glenna has just dropped her sister off at the airport and is heading home when she is blinded by the sun off an oncoming truck windsheild running off the road. Before she knows what's happening the truck is back and two huge, gorgeous men are approaching and taking charge. Leland and Joe are immediately taken by Glenna. While Joe checks her over Leland handles the car.OK he handles Glenna as well. Give me an overbearing dominant Panther any day. Yum.

Jo and Leland orphaned as young children are the Alphas of their back of list panther boys (now men). They protect their privacy at all costs and are really confused by their attraction to Glenna. She doesn't understand but two men are attracted to her and she is ready to embrace whatever this is for as long as it lasts unfortunately circumstances get in the way and she runs. So what's a panther to do?

Chase, of course and claim their woman.

Fun read.

Curl up with a good story

The first book was all right. This one was better. Finding true love and then keeping it is a hard thing to do. There was tension between the two men and fighting "she's mine," "no she's mine" that sort of thing that was a little irritating at first. But the men worked everything out.

But she was too upset to stay especially when she found out something and when she did she ran. Her men found her and saved her life literally. But the entire pack accepted her upon their return especially when they all saw the condition that she was in. Luckily when the bad guy tries to kidnap her she literally screams the house down and they all come to the rescue. Her men and some shifting into panthers.

The story is slowly coming together about their past lives and it leaves you wanting more of the story. Looking forward to more of it coming out in future books.

How Christianity Conquered Rome: The Untold Story

Ramsay MacMullen, the author of Christianizing the Roman Empire, is the Dunham Professor of History and Classics at Yale University. On January 5, of 2001 he was the recipient of a lifetime Award for Scholarly Distinction from the American Historical Association. The citation begins, "Ramsay MacMullen is the greatest historian of the Roman Empire alive today." Obviously the author is eminently qualified for his research for this work.

Christianity grew dramatically from the day of Pentecost to the year 400 through mass conversations. At the end of the first century, the church held a minimal significance in Roman society. It simply "did not count." Within three centuries it included ten percent of the population and had displaced the other religions of the empire. In Christianizing the Roman Empire MacMullen addresses the factors for this amazing growth. The author demonstrates that these mass conversions first came through the power of miracles and later through the social advantage of becoming a Christian. As such, MacMullen is diminishing the value of Christian piety and the testimony of martyrs as reasons for the mass evangelization.

The book is divided into two sections, which are the times prior to 312 and after 312 (Constantine's "conversion" in 312 and the Edict of Milan in 313). He first examines what Pagans of the culture believed. Then he looks at what Christians presented to the Pagans about this new faith, and how they presented it. The influence of Constantine is examined, as are the non-religious factors that led to conversions. MacMullen then looks at evangelical campaigns after 312, including the conversion of intellectuals. Finally he looks at the quality of the conversions and those that were won through coercion.

I found MacMullen's research and use of sources of the highest quality. The book contains forty-three pages of endnotes and commentary by the author about the endnotes. In addition, the biography is extensive and would be of great value for those desiring to do additional research on the subject. He uses many sources to verify his thesis that Christian miracles during the early years and favored advantage in the former years, rather than Christian love, piety, and courage in martyrdom, resulted in the dramatic growth of the church. MacMullen's research confirmed that Christianity becoming the Roman State religion strongly diluted the spiritual nature of the church.

Christianizing the Roman Empire is an outstanding work of research by an eminently qualified authority. I found the material fascinating. Some of it attacked my pre-conceived notions, while other aspects of the book confirmed my reasoned suspicions. The book is written for those who already have some knowledge and study in church history during this era in Rome. Though MacMullen obviously is writing this book to an educated audience, the writing style is not nearly as high quality as his research. The first two chapters may cause some sincere readers to give up on the book before they have an opportunity to enjoy its valuable contribution. Despite its shortcomings, I would highly recommend Christianizing the Roman Empire to those with a high interest in learning more about this period of Roman and church history.

What "Conversion" to Christianity Meant, 100-400 A.D.

MacMullen's portraits of how people of the Empire became "Christians" are indelible -- and possibly, to some, disturbing. His account of how masses, crowds, throngs -- were "converted" to Christianity at the same time, on the same occasion, is riveting and thought-provoking. MacMullen describes too the very real, "everyday," yet typically, today, minimized, way miracles led to conversion and the Christianizing of the Roman Empire. Indeed, MacMullen's assessment (buttressed by his nearly exclusive reliance on primary sources) of what conversion meant in the first centuries after Christ is the heart of the book. MacMullen deploys indefatigable erudition (don't shrug off the footnotes: they contain some of the best writing in the book) and expresses himself with style, even grace, a thoughtful man writing authoritatively -- if at times iconoclastically -- about a crucial passage in the development of Christianity and rise of the West.

History -- not diatribe

I am delighted with this book because it presents the facts
about early christianity without going into a diatribe in
some particular direction. This is a book about the documented
history of christianity -- not pro christian dogma and not
anti-christian diatribe. While documentation is not the end
of every possible controversy (in fact the book brings up new
questions) it is at least helpful to know what information can
in fact be found -- and to know what is not to be found.
