Great illustrations helpful in developing a framework for learning medical embryology

As a first year med student coming from a non-bio background, embryology was a relatively foreign subject to me in the beginning of the year. I chose this book based on the many useful drawings which I think illustrate concepts well. The art style is consistent throughout the book -- which I like -- and because of the level of continuity, the illustrations and captions alone have been great for learning the basics. The text seems detailed enough to use as a reference as well but is likely to be overwhelming for review purposes. The paper quality is EXCELLENT, with thick glossy pages.

Impressions / comparisons to other highly-regarded resources:
- Langman's is packed with medically-relevant details while text is a lot more concise. Not as many pictures.
- Carlson's Human Embryology and Developmental Biology seems to place a greater emphasis on the biochemical basis of development, i.e. the factors / chemicals driving developmental changes.

A great improvement
By recent MD
This book is a vast improvement over the 3rd edition written mostly by Larsen and completed by others. It makes the study of embryology, well, not enjoyable, but at least painless. The authors have corrected previous editorial blunders like missing colors, but they didn't catch them all, like the missing heart outline in the last image of the systemic venous system. Other image improvements are the addition of more labeled components of images carried over from the 3rd edition; still not enough in some cases, though. Pointless images have been removed, mostly SEMs. The heart chapter has been completely rewritten, with diagrams that make a previously obscure exposition readable. Embryonic folding, always a tough read, has been split to the gastrointestinal, body cavity, and week 4 chapters, which makes more sense. Molecular and clinical information is spread throughout each chapter at appropriate places, instead of being lumped together at the end, and of course, it's all up to date (well, for 2008). There are several new well-written and illustrated chapters.

The book retains the reversed definitions of the aorticorenal and superior mesenteric ganglia, despite the fact that both are correctly labeled in the (identical) diagrams of the two editions. Supporting evidence that no one actually proofread this section is that, like the previous edition, "superior mesenteric ganglia" is not in bold font, as are the other two ganglia. This error would have been corrected were it not for the second most annoying practice of this publisher, which is their refusal to post errata for any textbook or to give readers a way to report errors to them. The preface to this edition has an email address for one of the authors whom I have advised of the ganglia error. (The most annoying practice is their gobbling up of a large fraction of screen real estate with their pretentious logo, titling, menus, buttons, and other nonsense, in the studentconsult online version of the book. And they are not interested in hearing from you about it. But all that is moot, because studentconsult is a complete farce, including animations which confuse more than elucidate.)

One may also wonder why, when editorial practice in recent years has been to replace eponymous nomenclature with functional terms, the authors chose to replace "paramesonephric duct" with "M�llerian duct". And they kept the word "anlage", which hasn't been spoken by man or beast in decades. In a short section of the Introduction entitled "Phases of Human Embryology", the word 'purpose' is used seven times. This is an affront to the scientifically enlightened (does not include most med students), because it promotes the notion of teleology, which, unless you're a member of the Flat Earth Society, is bullbleep. Subliminal messages, possibly unintended, inculcate incorrect notions in the naive reader, and can adversely affect clinical practice. I recommend that all words suggestive of teleology be excised for the next edition. For starters, replace 'purpose' with 'effect'.

All that aside, this is probably the best embryo book on the market for the serious medical student or resident. Those who only want to memorize answers for Step 1 should find something simpler, like a dime-thin USMLE review book that drills on answers with no pretense of teaching anything. Such comic book level reviews, however, will not even approximate in number the cornucopia of pathologies in Larsen's.

Ideal Embryology textbook

This is a great book. You don't have to be a rocket scientist to understand what is being explained. The graphics are great and helpful to visualize concepts and stages of development. It's paperback and light weight, which helps when you have to carry it around in a backpack. The only con is that the animations on the website are very short, some less than 30 seconds, with no text or audio explanation of what is being shown.

About the Author

Younes Shabany received his BS in mechanical engineering from Sharif University of Technology in Tehran, Iran, in 1991. He then went to Vancouver, Canada where he obtained his MS in mechanical engineering from the University of British Columbia in 1994. He came to the United States and received a Ph.D in mechanical engineering with a minor in aeronautics and astronautics from Stanford University, California, in 1999. Dr. Shabany has over 18 years of experience in thermal-fluid engineering. He is currently Director of Thermal Engineering & Design and Thermal Architect in Advanced Technology Group at Flextronics International USA, Milpitas, California. In this position, he has been leading thermal design activities in Flextronics’ worldwide design centers on a variety of infrastructure, computing, consumer, automobile, medical, and power electronic products. Before Flextronics, he worked for Applied Thermal Technologies, Santa Clara, California, where he was the director for two years. While at Applied Thermal Technologies, he worked with over 60 companies and designed thermal solutions for about as many pieces of electronic equipment including telecom and networking equipment, desktop and laptop computers, biomedical equipment, and consumer products. Dr. Shabany has also been a lecturer at San Jose State University, California, since the summer of 2001. He has taught undergraduate and graduate courses in heat transfer and advanced mathematical analysis including his most favorite course, Heat Transfer in Electronics. He has also advised graduate students on their projects and theses.

Good Textbook

As an electrical engineering students required to take a heat transfer class, this book did the job. I took the course with the author as the professor, and I thought that this book for the most part is concise and highlights the points which engineers need to know.

Some of the later chapters seem slightly less polished. There were also some typos, but I suppose it is not the first time I have run into typos in a textbook. Overall, this book was refreshingly to-the-point compared to some of the other engineering texts I have encountered so far. An added bonus is the form factor, it's about half the size of a regular textbook which makes it easy to bring around.

Heat Transfer - Thermal management of electonics

This book is very well written, with the necessary theory and realistic examples of many different heat transfer techniques that really helps a packaging engineer to do his job correctly. The author has a thorough understanding of heat transfer and knows how to explain this in a good way.
The only thing I miss is the answers to the exercises, in order to see if I have found the correct answeer.
A great book that I would use in undergraduate teaching if was giving such a course !!!

From the Psychological World to Quantum Reality

The Shamanic Roots of Ho‘oponopono

The new is always inside and never outside, everything is within you, not outside of you.

Shamanism has been practiced on our planet for several millennia. Some claim that shamanism’s origins are to be found in Siberia or Central Asia. But shamanism was practiced widely in Europe as well. The majority of prehistoric caverns were once the site of ceremonies in which shamanic journeys were undertaken regularly. The druids, in their day, were great shamans. In Greece, Plato speaks of holy priests who used techniques that allowed them to travel outside of their bodies.

A path of oral transmission, shamanism has vanished from some parts of the world, but it still thrives among certain peoples such as the Mongols, the native peoples of North and South America, and the aborigines of Australia.

Shamanism is closely connected to animist thought, which sees all the elements of nature--such as plants, rocks, wind, and rain--as endowed with life force and thus worthy of the highest respect.

The shaman creates the connection between the human world and the world of the spirits. He travels into the world of the invisible in search of the answers to the questions that concern his tribe (Where should we set up our camp? Where should we hunt?) or simply an individual of his community such as questions concerning illness or family relations.

The Origins of Ho‘oponopono

Originally, Ho‘oponopono was a ritual used by the peoples of the Hawaiian islands to resolve community problems. This ritual served as a procedure for reconciliation. It consisted of gathering all the members of the tribe together so they could share their problems and conflicts. Once this had been done, each individual asked forgiveness for the inappropriate and even erroneous thoughts they had put out that were the cause of the problem.

In these earlier times, Ho‘oponopono was organized by the shamans. It was part of the approach that advocated respect for the “spirits” and was also connected to the divine. From this perspective, the thoughts emitted and actions performed by human beings, if they were the fruits of erroneous memories, could also disrupt the world of the spirits. They also posed a risk of summoning--or creating--troublemaking spirits. Ho‘oponopono was therefore used as a reconciliation technique among members of the village, but it also ensured that the tribe remained in perfect harmony with the world around them, thus earning the good graces of the nature spirits.

Modern Ho‘oponopono

Over time, this ritual became somewhat neglected. It would not be until the late twentieth century when a Hawaiian shaman, Morrnah Nalamaku Simeona, revised this ritual to appeal to more modern tastes. She was a kahuna lapa’au, a healer and secret keeper (kahuna means “secret keeper” and lapa’au means “healer”).

Morrnah explains: “We are the accumulation of all our experiences, which amounts to saying that we are burdened with our past.” The memory created by each experience is stored in the form of a thought in the etheric body, which is the subtle body closest to the physical body.

Inspired by the ancient ritual, she came up with a new protocol that could be practiced alone without the assistance of anyone else. This method consists of saying the following phrase: “I’m sorry, forgive me, thank you, I love you.” This appeals to the divine Higher Power to heal disruptive thoughts and memories. It can therefore be best described as a process of reconciliation with yourself by virtue of love energy.

Ho‘oponopono tells us that we are the creators of all that surrounds us and by changing our thoughts we are able to make the life we are living harmonious. This is not so very far from the shamanic viewpoint. In fact, the ancestors believed that the erroneous thoughts of individuals had a deleterious effect on the spirits that lived in their close proximity and that these spirits would consequently send them unpleasant situations in return. Conversely, by thinking positively and erasing erroneous memories, these same individuals would restore harmonious relations with the spirits of the invisible world, who would then shower them with their favors.

The Formation of the Human Being

Ho‘oponopono makes it possible to restore balance between the outside world (visible and invisible) and the inner
world. As it happens, what we might call “self identity” is made up of four elements:

• unihipili or subconscious mind, which stores the memories of past experiences and emotions;

• uhane or conscious mind, which corresponds with our reason and intelligence;

• aumalua or higher self (soul), which resides in a higher dimension;

• spark or divine intelligence, where inspiration and identity are created.

The ideal state exists when these four parts are equally balanced. It is interesting to note that contemporary medicine is of the same opinion concerning the conscious and the unconscious (it of course has nothing to say about the soul or divine spark), which must be in balance for the mental health of an individual.

The purpose of Ho‘oponopono is to re-create the equilibrium between the four parts of your identity, so that you may reconnect with your divine spark (or inner God) and recover your inner peace. For Morrnah Nalamaku Simeona, peace begins with the self. She went on to say: “We are only here to bring peace into our lives, and if we bring peace into our lives, everything around us will find its proper place, rhythm, and peace.”

According to the shamanic vision, Ho‘oponopono makes it possible to recover one’s inner and outer equilibrium and restore balance to the self and with the spirits of nature.

Human beings are weighed down by their past. When they are feeling stress or fear, they should look within. They will see that the cause of their discomfort comes from an erroneous memory--a fear, value, or belief that simply needs to be cleansed with the words of Ho‘oponopono.

Transformative and Practical

On a very practical level, this book is the best tool I have found for letting go of old baggage that I had been hauling around for decades. It is as easy to practice as introduced early in the book, and doing so daily without expectations begins to reveal a richer life and unexpected pleasant surprises. The chapters that relate concepts in the book to modern discoveries in quantum physics are particularly fascinating. I found it interesting that the book predicted further substantiation of energy capable of unimpeded travel across the universe such as the gravimetric waves recently detected by the LIGO facilities.

I am motivated to learn more about Hooponopono because of this book

I live in Hawaii, so I am interested in learning about anything that has to do with the Hawaiian culture. Hooponopono is the Hawaiian practice of forgiveness and healing. I understand that when I am feeling a negative emotion such as anger or fear, I can use Hooponopono to replace that fear by saying four simple phrases. These phrases are I'm sorry, I love you, thank you and forgive me. This is something that would be very hard for me to do when I am angry and scared, but it is something that I should strive to do more. Hooponopono does not replace medical treatment or therapy. I should not expect a miracle and be relieved of all negative emotions, but I truly believe that I can feel more at peace with myself and my coworkers by using Hooponopono in stressful situations.

I really like the concepts of unihipili, uhane and aumalua. Unihipili is the unconscious mind. Uhane is the conscious mind. Aumalua is the soul or divine intelligence. These are all parts of an individual person. When Hooponopono is used, then all of these parts of a person is balanced. This book motivates me to learn more about Hooponopono and become more balanced in my life. I want to learn how to develop these Hawaiian aspects of myself more/ I enjoy expanding my Hawaiian vocabulary, and I appreciate this information very much. I believe that a separate book could be written about each of these concepts. This book is missing stories of people who have used Hooponopono, but hopefully I can find that in another book or discover it for myself. This book motivates me to do more research on Hooponopono.

About the Author

Dr. Paula Lentz is an associate professor and academic program director in the Department of Business Communication at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. She teaches Business Writing and Advanced Business Writing and develops and teaches online communication courses for the University of Wisconsin MBA Consortium program.

Dr. Lentz is particularly interested in qualitative research that explores narratives and organizational cultures, genre theory, and writing a pedagogy in online environments. She has developed numerous online courses and online materials for hybrid and flipped classrooms. In addition, she has published and presented frequently on topics of rhetoric in business communication and continues to do freelance writing, editing, and consulting. Dr. Lentz's professional activities include involvement in the Association for Business Communication, where she chairs the Academic Environment Committee. She received a BA from Coe College, an MA from UW-Eau Claire, and� PhD in Rhetoric and Scientific and Technical Communication from the University of Minnesota.

Associate Professor in the English Department at the University of Cincinnati. Dr. Rentz was named the 2008 winner of the Association for Business Communication's (ABC’s) Outstanding Teacher Award. In addition, an article she co-authored in 2007 just won the association’s award for Outstanding Article in the Journal of Business Communication. She has performed many roles for the association, including serving on the board of directors, organizing a conference, and chairing the publications board. She served two terms as an Associate Editor of the Journal of Business Communication and was Interim Editor from 2000–2001, for which she won the Francis W. Weeks Award of Merit. Dr. Rentz has published articles and commentary on pedagogy, genre theory, narrative, and ethics in such journals as Business Communication Quarterly, the Journal of Business Communication, Technical Communication Quarterly, and the Journal of Business and Technical Communication. She has participated in many professional meetings and seminars over the years and is always learning from her colleagues and her students.

Almost Spanking Brand New

Since this was my first time renting a book, I was very pleased. The book looked almost spanking brand new! Very informative! Definitions could use a little more wording and understanding. Overall, good book and I would try a rental again!
