Is Lord Lucan still alive? What happened to the crew of the Mary Celeste? Where is Boudicca buried? In this handsomely illustrated volume the author describes some of the great and not so great missing people, places and things of history. Each entry is short and the author describes the mystery and proposed solutions. Except to rule out the unlikiest solutions, Mr. Smith generally does not try to solve the mysteries. Nevertheless, this is an entertaining book that may encourage you to look for more detailed accounts of some of the missing.

Jenkins' writing talent is truly "Vivid!"

This novel was great. If you love historical romance novels as I do, you'll love this one! This book was written so that it read like it was written by a veteran of historical romance. As I say before about Jenkins' novels, if you are in the mood for a great history lesson, just pick up one of her romance novels!! Vivid was a character any women could love because she repersented a strong women of her time that were determine to have careers that men usually held. She was educated, dedicated, had her own opinion, and was a doctor to boot! It was just her luck to fall in love with Grayson Grove's handsome, stubborm, closed minded mayor Nate Grayson. But Vivid had his mind wide open by the end of the book in more ways then one. One could easily fall in love with their characters, along with all the other wonderful characters presented in this book! Another great read form the very talented Beverly Jenkins!!

It's no secret that for many years, even in this day and age, that women are often deemed inferior to men, and that our rightful duties are taking care of hearth and home, and leaving the work to the men. In Beverly Jenkins' novel VIVID, we are introduced to Viveca Lancaster, an African-American female physician. Anxious to put her medical degree to work, Viveca, or Vivid as she is better known, applies for a position in the small town of Niles, Michigan. When she learns that the job is hers, she's ecstatic. That is, until she meets Nate Grayson, the mayor of Niles.

Nate is surprised, to say the least, when he learns that the doctor he allowed his aunt to hire is a female. When he discovers his aunt's duplicity, Nate is determined to put Vivid on the first train back to where she came from and hire a real doctor, a male doctor. Nate soon discovers that Vivid is a woman of inherent strength and one who is determined to prove herself capable of the job at hand. After much persuasion, Nate finally decides to give Vivid a chance to prove her worth, and in the process discovers an attraction to the feisty doctor.

I must admit, I've never been much of a history buff, and because of the historical nature of the majority of Beverly Jenkins books, it was my intention to avoid her books at all costs. Thanks to the advice of a dear friend of mine, I learned that I may have been a bit presumptuous in my decision, so I decided to give Ms. Jenkins' historical romances a try. VIVID was my first Beverly Jenkins read, and I've been hooked ever since.

Ms. Jenkins tell her stories with such realism, it's as if she actually lives in the era of which she writes. I also like the fact that the heroine in this novel was not one of those weak-willed women who felt dependent upon a man to be someone. Instead, she was strong-willed and ready to fight tooth and nail for what she believed in. VIVID was a sensually romantic story and one in which the brief history lesson we are treated to enhances, and not detracts, from the story.

About the Author

Phillip Page, MS, PT, ATC, CSCS, is a physical therapist, athletic trainer, and certified strength and conditioning specialist. As manager of clinical education and research for Thera-Band Products, he has performed research on elastic resistance exercises. He has lectured internationally on the scientific and clinical use of elastic resistance and developed an educational course on elastic resistance that is being taught in six countries.

Previously, he was team physical therapist for the New Orleans Saints professional football club and Tulane University.

He is certified by the National Athletic Trainers' Association (NATA) and was awarded the NATA's Otto Davis Post Graduate Scholarship in 1991.

He earned a bachelor's degree in physical therapy from Louisiana State University Medical Center in New Orleans and a master's degree in exercise physiology from Mississippi State University. Page is in private practice in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, specializing in sports and orthopedic physical therapy.

Todd S. Ellenbecker, MS, PT, SCS, OCS CSCS, is the clinic director at the Physiotherapy Associates Sports Clinic, in Scottsdale, Arizona. A licensed physical therapist, he has researched and taught in the field for 16 years.

He is the author of The Elbow in Sport and Complete Conditioning for Tennis and editor of Knee Ligament Rehabilitation. He co-wrote Closed Kinetic Chain Exercise.

Ellenbecker has conducted extensive research on exercise and testing in musculoskeletal rehabilitation.

He is certified by the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) as both a sports clinical specialist and orthopedic clinical specialist. The APTA also awarded him its Sports Physical Therapy Clinical Teaching Award in 1999. He is chairman of the APTA's Shoulder Special Interest Group and a manuscript reviewer for the Journal of Orthopaedic and Sports Physical Therapy.

Ellenbecker earned a bachelor's degree in physical therapy from the University of Wisconsin at LaCrosse and a master's degree in exercise physiology from Arizona State University. He also is certified as a strength and conditioning specialist.

It's not for the layman, although there are some interesting topics here that would likely interest many.

I think what interested me most in this book was the science backing the use of elastic resistance in both a clinical setting and a more general use. Since I use strength bands myself, I am always looking for science that will prove or disprove its value and how it compares to other forms of resistance.

One of the sections I was especially interested in was using elastic resistance training with older adults. I wish we could get more older people to use this form of exercise. After age thirty, people start losing muscle rapidly. And, in older people, this loss can actually be reversed with resistance training. In fact, according to the book, older people need resistance training "more" than aerobic training.

According to the book, in a study by Carpinelli and Otto 1998; Starkey et al. 1996, "With the exception of Berger's study, the literature indicated that a single set of resistance training is sufficient to result in strength gains (Graves, Pollock, and Forester 1990). To date no study has examined the efficacy of a single set versus multiple sets of resistance training with ETDs, although considering the similarities in strength gains observed between ETD and other types of resistance training, we can assume that a single set with an ETD would result in similar strength gains as multiple sets."

It recommends that to increase muscular strength in older adults, they should complete a single set of 8 to 12 reps. If, however, the goal is to increase muscular endurance, up to 3 sets of 20 to 25 reps is recommended.

I'd like to know what the recommendation is for a combination of the above. I didn't see that in the book.

There are lots of photos in the book. All black and white. All age appropriate. Seems the authors chose to use Thera-Bands for the exercises. To be sure, Thera-Band is well-known for helping with range of motion and is quite often a superior choice. There are, however, many other types of bands and tubing and I am not sure Thera-Band is the best choice in all cases. I know I use many different types of bands and tubing. But Thera-Band is used a good deal in the clinical setting.

The book starts out with the science behind the use of elastic band training. Then it goes into how to properly use the bands, the exercises and the different groups who will benefit from their use.

I think anyone in the business of helping people recover from illness or injury, preventing illness or injury or helping people to simply be fit, would do well to own this book.

Many people overlook the real value of elastic band training. Now, however, it's becoming quite popular and it's close to a sport with many people. It certainly has a valuable place in any fitness program.

This book is a true asset to anyone who wants to help others to gain fitness and overcome disability or limitations.

About the Author
Cardwell C. Nuckols, Ph.D., is an expert on brain development and recovery who has been described as "one of the most influential clinical trainers in America." His many publications include the national best-seller, Cocaine: Dependency to Recovery. His recent DVD, "The Science Based Treatment of Addictive Disorders," provides a scientific basis for many of the ideas first addressed in Healing the Child Within.

Charles L. Whitfield, M.D., is a physician, psychotherapist, and internationally recognized expert on mental illness, behavioral problems, and recovery. He has been on the faculty of the Rutgers University Summer Institute of Alcohol and Drug Studies from 1978 to 2003, and in private practice of medicine and psychotherapy since 1976. Chapter 1
Discovering Our Child Within

The concept of the Child Within has been a part of our world culture for at least two thousand years. Carl Jung called it the 'Divine Child' and Emmet Fox called it the 'Wonder Child.' Psychotherapists Alice Miller and Donald Winnicott refer to it as the 'true self.' Many in the field of alcoholism and other chemical dependence call it the 'inner child.'

The Child Within refers to that part of each of us which is ultimately alive, energetic, creative and fulfilled; it is our Real Self―who we truly are.
With our parents' unknowing help and society's assistance, most of us deny our Inner Child. When this Child Within is not nurtured or allowed freedom of expression, a false or co-dependent self emerges. We begin to live our lives from a victim stance, and experience difficulties in resolving emotional traumas. The gradual accumulation of unfinished mental and emotional business can lead to chronic anxiety, fear, confusion, emptiness and unhappiness.

Denial of the Child Within and the subsequent emergence of a false self or negative ego are particularly common among children and adults who grew up in troubled families, such as those where chronic physical or mental illness, rigidity, coldness or lack of nurturing were common.

Yet, there is a way out. There is a way to discover and to heal our Child Within and to break free of the bondage and suffering from relying on our false self. That is what this book is about.

Saved my life

This made a huge difference in my life as I faced the past that I had buried and found out that it wasn't really that scary at all. It was simple really--I just wanted attention and never quite got what I needed growing up. Now that I am an adult I can give myself the attention I need because that inner child isn't really a separate entity but is a vital part of who we are. The childish wonder and acceptance we are taught to repress is what we can use to motivate ourselves through life.

This book can relate to so many people that come dysfunctional families, alcoholic families, addict families and can cover so many areas. Some part do not pertain to me but there are a lot of things that I can definitely relate to.
