Excelent reference book

I have David's book on A7r II and only thing I regretted on this book that I bought paper copy instead of kindle. I got A6000 book on kindle and love it. I can take it with me on smartphone and look up things in a field. A6000 guide is very similar to A7r II guide in structure with many practical tips and illustrations. Very helpful to me and must have for somebody who never had alpha camera.

In the twenty years since the first edition of "Theory and Calculation of Alternating Current Phenomena" appeared, electrical engineering has risen from a small beginning to the world's greatest industry; electricity has found its field, as the means of universal energy transmission, distribution and supply, and our knowledge of electrophysics and electrical engineering has increased many fold, so that subjects, which twenty years ago could be dismissed with a few pages discussion, now have expanded and require an extensive knowledge by every electrical engineer.

In the following volume I have discussed the most important characteristics of the fundamental conception of electrical engineering, such as electric conduction, magnetism, wave shape, the meaning of reactance and similar terms, the problems of stability and instability of electric systems, etc., and also have given a more extended application of the method of complex quantities, which the experience of these twenty years has shown to be the most powerful tool in dealing with alternating current phenomena.

In some respects, the following work, and its companion volume, "Theory and Calculation of Electrical Apparatus," may be considered as continuations, or rather as parts of "Theory and Calculation of Alternating Current Phenomena." With the 4th edition, which appeared nine years ago, "Alternating Current Phenomena" had reached about the largest practical bulk, and when rewriting it for the 5th edition, it became necessary to subdivide it into three volumes, to include at least the most necessary structural elements of our knowledge of electrical engineering. The subject matter thus has been distributed into three volumes: "Alternating Current Phenomena," "Electric Circuits," and "Electrical Apparatus."

Great edition of an old book, interesting read, great info, read it with a grain salt

This is a really good book by the father of electricity. He was a very good explainer although some words or expressions may be unfamiliar due to the age difference. This book is a great read but should be read with grain of salt, you have to be aware that the stuff in this book is more than 100 years old, many of the chapters are plain obsolete, and many of the techniques, theories and materials were not invented or discovered back then so you shouldnt take literally everything this book says. However most of the core information of the book hasnt changed over the last 100 years, Steinmetz who first described magnetic hysteresis, makes a very fine job explaining it in this book, most of the book is focused on the magnetic effects of materials, hystereresis and its impact on electric circuits, this book should provide a solid foundation on magnetic hysteresis, complemented with a more modern book which approaches new materials and techniques.

As for the edition of this book, I must say it is great, no missing words, formulas or images, the paper quality is quite good, relatively thick yellowish paper, also the print quality is quite good. I've seen complete editorial disasters with these old Steinmetz books, in which pages will be missing, or graphs and formulas will be chopped off, etc.. this is not the case with this book, this one is very clean, I wish the quality of the other Steinmetz books could be as good as this one.

Way better than.the normal easyway book

I actually bought both books :-)

The easyway one and the onlyway one.

The onlyway is quite a bit longer and more of a narrative style.

For some reason the onlyway got through to me whereas the easyway book didn't.

Bear in mind that both books are about the easyway to stop smoking.

I'm now a happy (seriously) non smoker. Really this is totally different to trying to give up cigarettes using willpower.

If you have a rational mind you will appreciate his methods :-)

With so many other reviews about this book out there I will not spend a lot of time or words on Allen Carr's volume here. Others have described it very well. I have read his "Easyway To...." several times which is a more concise (meaning less wordy) book focusing on a brief history of his "discovery" and personal journey with smoking to his ideas about smoking and stopping that make up the basics of his program. AFTER reading, or shall I say attempting to read this volume, I went with an e-reader copy of Carr's "Little Book of Quitting" for personal review purposes. Perhaps I over indulged (pun intended) in Carr's wisdom, but to be honest I could not get through this massive volume.
Qualifications about this volume : I think he wrote it B4 writing the slimmer "Easyway" book. It is a thick softcover and goes into great detail the logic and illogic of ideas related to smoking and stopping. It is printed in small font, and that is an issue for me these days (an e reader lets you magnify / zoom for easier viewing) and I have read so many books over the years it was probably a personal thing that I could not finish it. I cannot blame Carr for the style of publication, but as a reader I can say "too much information" and aim it at him/her. It was too much for me, anyway.
Conclusion : IF you have the time, energy, and patience to swim with this volume, then go ahead, you will probably learn a great deal about smoking and aspects of it. But - if like me you just want to know the basics and then pick up details later in further research from the Internet or perhaps another book somewhere down the line, I would have to say avoid this volume and go for one of his later publications or even treat yourself to his online quit smoking seminar ($150 as of this writing, versus $450 for his "live" seminars) that are the cornerstone of his work. I think Allen Carr has real value in the self help world of smoking cessation and that was my motivation to investigate this earlier volume of his.

Hey skeptics. It works.

It helped me quit. Quit for nine years and started up for four years and it was way harder to quit the second time. Tried patches and cutting down without success. Willpower was useless. I bought the Integral Meditation book because I own all of Ken’s previous books.

The introduction made me very excited and promised a more productive or efficient spiritual growth process , a Super Duper Integral Meditation.

From one (or more)of Ken’s earlier books, the 3rd way of knowing or the 3rd eye or the eye of the spirit was prescribed something like this from Ken. “meditate for 5 years and then get back to me” The Introduction seemed to offer hope to me since 5 years of meditation have not met my expectations. So I was looking to a shortcut for meditation results.

1,Growing Up, is simply a restatement of classic AQAL Stages
Chap 2, Waking up, is simply a restatement of classic AQAL States
Chap 3, Showing up, is more detail on the 4 quadrants classic perspectives
Chap 4, Our many Streams its a review of Ken’s Classic Lines of Development, etc

So I was hoping that Chap 5 would help me learn methods for SuperDuper Integral MEDITATION. But I didn’t get it. In fact it wasn’t till page 212 that I saw the word meditation. I would like to see the results of a search for the word meditation in the 221 pages of the book.

The Best Simplification of Wilber Yet

Probably the best INTRODUCTION to Wilber's life-changing philosophy. This is not his deepest work, it is not intended to be, it is specifically a condensation of all of his most important ideas and advances intended for the types of people who purchase books on meditation. This sort of book has been called for and demanded by Wilber fans for a long time. As a daily zen meditator, I did find that it strengthened my practice, as well as the understanding and motivation behind my practice. A lot of the Wilber language has been 'dumbed down' for a more general audience. In a few places, I wonder if this hasn't in fact made the content slightly MORE confusing. Over all, it is very well written, very well thought-out, and it is a service to mankind that this book exists. If you have no idea what Ken Wilber is about, yes of course buy this book. You'd be crazy not to. For the seasoned veteran of integral theory, expect only slight innovations and a whole lot of covering the same ground you saw in other recent Wilber titles. However, I should say, the "theory of everything" has never looked cleaner than it does here.

An important milestone in human civilization

At the heart of the world's wisdom traditions is the process of "waking up" from self-centredness to full enlightenment. When a child is born, their abilities are yet to be developed. Developmental psychology studies how our various human abilities "grow up" through child, adolescent and adult to wise and compassionate levels of development. Wilber claims that for the first time in human history he has provided a way to integrate the processes of "waking up" enlightenment and "growing up" our innate abilities, such as cognitive, emotional, moral, and over a dozen different intelligences. This is a important milestone in human civilization.

But Wilber is human. I'm Australian, he is American. Some parts of his text are awkward for me. He over-sells, he over-speculates, he fails to deliver on his full integral model. He has put up his tent primarily in the upper left quadrant of his AQAL model. He does not explore satisfactorily the interplay between the individual's psycho-spiritual development and the ever changing socio-cultural conditions in which they live.

But don't let my personal biases diminish Wilber's incredible achievement. He integrates much more of human development than any one school of spirituality or psychology or many other attempts to unite body, mind and spirit in theory. He asks us to wake up, grow up, and show up altogether in practice.

I used other volumes in the Aramaic Bible series while in seminary, so it seemed only logical, now that I have begun teaching, to continue to do so. The Targum of the Minor Prophets has proven to be a valuable addition to my course materials on the Minor Prophets, provoking much excellent class discussion, and shedding light on difficult passages in this portion of Scripture.
Any serious student of the Minor Prophets, whether Christian or Jewish, should pay serious attention to this excellent work.
I highly recommend it.

Should the Aramaic translator said something different about Jonah and the Whale?

My reviews of the two volumes Targum Neofiti 1: Genesis and Targum Pseudo-Jonathan: Genesis give information about this 19 volume series that presents an English translation of the Aramaic translations of the Hebrew Bible. This is volume 14 of the series. It renders the Aramaic translation of the twelve "minor prophets" into English and points out how the translators gave us a non-literal rendering and how they inserted their own views; views they felt their readers need to know. Reading their translations, we might feel that they should have made additional changes.

It should be noted that despite the current title "minor prophets," these prophets are not considered "minor" people or "minor" books by Jews and Christians. The term "minor" signifies that the writings are brief. The twelve volumes were collected into a single book because of their small size, but each prophet had his own message to his own audience, in his own particular time, and each spoke differently. The following are some examples of how one of these Aramaic translators altered and did not alter the prophets' messages.

The story of Jonah and the whale is one of the twelve. The translator adds information several times in the first three verses to emphasize that the word that came from the Lord to Jonah was a "prophecy." He disparages the behavior of the frightened sailors during the storm at sea; they didn't "cry out": "each man prayed to his idol, but they saw that it was useless." The biblical book has the name "Hebrew," which was what non-Israelites called Israelites, but the translator substituted the name used when he was writing, "Jew."

While rational Jewish and non-Jewish thinkers consider the episode of the fish swallowing Jonah and keeping him alive in its belly for three days a parable, the Aramaic translator renders this verse without any change. Similarly, while he changes virtually every other passage in Jonah in some way, he renders "And the Lord spoke to the fish, and it threw Jonah up on the dry land," without any change.

Good book, worthless software

The book is an update to the previous edition. Unfortunately, everything you needed to know can be found in the original version for less $$. The software is buggy. The Java code is "write once, run maybe" and will not install on anything but certain versions/builds of Windows and internet explorer. Great book for learning G-codes, but buy the first edition at a discount.

CD alone worth the price; trouble under Win2000

I totally disagree with the previous reviewer's opinion: the software is what makes this book great. Of course you need the latest version of IE to run the CD, but why is that a problem? The CD includes what amounts to a complete multimedia course on CNC machining, including mill and lathe simulators. I was totally impressed. That is a lot of video clips and footage of the actual machining process. I sat down knowing little about CNC and left able to write CNC programs to make real parts.
What's really great is that once you learn a concept, you can try it out on the simulators. That really speeds up the learning process and helps retention. You can immediately answer any questions you have about how things actually work by doing little experiments.
Except for a few rough edges on the simulators, everything worked great. We had a little trouble with the file structure of the CD under Windows 2000 NTFS. The programs worked except it wouldn't autorun the install program or let you browse the CD. Finally we had to clone the CD on Win98 to get it to work on Windows 2000.
The best book I've seen on CNC yet, all because of the CD. Not perfect, but highly recommended.

Get a Life!

As a 12 year experienced journeyman, I found the book and program to do exactly what was expected. When someone buys a book or tries to learn from a book. Its intended purpose is to teach a person the foundation of the subject matter. This book was designed to give just that. I have tested the software and found no problems that would have not occurred in a real life situation. Do not teach students that if your CNC does not work or crashes, than the CNC machine or manufacturer [stinks]! To the teachers of the world that complain that it does not work. Get a Life! In the real world, CNC operations do just what you complain about, they CRASH. Now teach your students how to correct the problem. Stop teaching them how to complain. The software and book, and any book of learning, are not intended to make you and expert. It is to TEACH people that want to learn about the subject mater! Do to the number of different CNC interfaces that are on the market or being used in the REAL world. The book tells you right from the beginning, that codes are different to each machine manufacturer. That most machines are based off of the ISO standards, but use their own codes. If someone wants to learn the foundation of CNC's then this is a book for them.

Review: Comparing Asian Politics: India, China, and Japan

I am not qualified to review this book. I found it browsing a discount warehouse in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee on spring break weekend. The store was right there on the strip and we were dying for something to do so we went in and I purchased several books for less than $10. I think Comparing Asian Politics: India, China, and Japan by Sue Ellen M. Charlton was $2 and it looked brand new. I was looking for books in general but books on China in particular and considered this a steal, the India and Japan part notwithstanding.

This book is probably best read under the tutelage of Charlton herself at Colorado State University, Fort Collins where she teaches political science. For that matter, any number of professors might be helpful but I'm trying to get my pre-China trip China studies on-the-cheap. The flight to China is going to cost something like a thousand dollars all by itself.

Reading Comparing Asian Politics: India, China, and Japan without the benefit of professors or fear of exams I was sometimes baffled and often just forcing my eyes along thinking about something else. This was in the early India and Japan parts. Nevertheless I learned something. Japan is a lot smaller than I thought. It looms so large in my world-view, you know? Yet Charlton notes that "Japan is, in fact, a mountaneous archipelago, with a total land mass of about the same size as the state of Montana" and some 127 million inhabitants. "Nearly one quarter of the population lives in the greater Tokyo metropolitan area alone," Charlton notes. I found much of interest even in the India parts, especially the story of the rise and trials and 1984 assassination of former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. There was also a reference to Tennessean Al Gore's electoral college loss to George W. Bush in the 2000 U.S. presidential election.

But it was China I came for and Charlton delivers with current information on the developing Three Gorges Dam project, which will power modern China but destroy cultural sites along the Yangtze River and displace many poor people. She also thoroughly examines Communist Party politics with its endless cadres or bureaucrats and provides insight on the Chinese constitution.

In a book this serious one is delighted to find maps and the maps in Comparing Asian Politics have immediately become personal favorites for their clarity and sharp use of black and white and shading, and because they were made at the University of Tennessee Cartographic Services Laboratory (Will Fontanez, Cartographer).

This might be the smartest two bucks I've ever spent. Comparing Asian Politics: India, China, and Japan by Sue Ellen M. Charlton would be a bargain even at retail price. - THOMAS BRENT ANDREWS / more reviews at [...] ##

BUT CAN PUT THOSE ISSUES ASIDE TO COLLECTIVELY PRAY FOR A MIRACLE. ITS AN EXAMPLE OF THE DIVINE HAND OF GOD AND AN ASSURANCE THAT HE IS STILL IN THE MIRACLE BUSINESS. HOW ONE CHILD CAN IMPACT SO MANY LIFES IS INCREDIBLE.LIFE AND RELATIONSHIPS ARE FRAGILE AT BEST.WE MUST HANDLE THEM CAREFULLY AND NOT TAKE THEM FOR GRANTED. Exccelent written book by Ralph McGehee about CIA never been a central intelligence agency but cover acction arm of the president's foreign policy advisers which have capacity to overthrows or supports foreign goverments while reporting "intelligence' justifying those activities. This book is one of the outstanding books written by former CIA agents. Everyone should read it to find the truth!!!

Kayla gets a concussion and Ergan finally gets her. These true mates are getting the HEA they've always wanted.

'Ergan' is the fifth book in the Winter Valley Wolves series by V. Vaughn. It's also part of the multi-author Mating Season Collection of stand alone paranormal romances and I was given a copy by the author in exchange for an honest review. Written in the first person and entirely from Kayla's point of view, something I don't usually like, I was so absorbed in the story I barely noticed. I loved it and couldn't put it down.

Kayla Hayward has come home to Winter Valley after finally managing to ditch the violent and controlling ex, Gary, a year ago, and is now teaching at Winter Valley High School. The former star of the Winter Valley Girl's Varsity Soccer Team is also coaching the current team and relaxing on her dock by the lake in the evening, listening to the wolves howl and making up romantic scenarios about werewolves. She also dreams of the guy she's had a crush on since she was a junior at the same high school and now sees every day, because now he's a teacher and coach there too.

Werewolf, History teacher and soccer coach Ergan Wakefield can't really believe his luck. He thought he'd lost her forever, but his true mate, Kayla Hayward, has finally come home after five years in Boston and he's determined not to lose her again, but he's sending some seriously mixed signals and she thinks he's not interested, then the ex turns up...

I'm not going to give any spoilers, but this terrific short story has everything you could want in a paranormal romance, including some really great characters, from the grouchy next door neighbour to the wonderful Wakefield family as well as humour, a minor mystery, a little action, steamy bits and the HEA we all expect. I loved it and I really can't wait for the next one.

I'm ADDICTED V. Vaughn's Winter Valley Wolves/ Second Chance Love (audio review)

I was given an ARC of Ergan from the author, in exchange for an honest review.

I couldn't wait to start this book, I'm ADDICTED to V. Vaughn's "Winter Valley Wolves" & was extremely happy to find out that it wasn't finished yet. Again I was quickly drawn into the story, entranced by what was happening inside, then BAM... it was finished, leaving me wanting more.

Kayla hasn't left Winter Valley since coming back for her 5 year reunion, infact she's found a job & plans to stay... Ergan has a second chance to be with his mate, but how to broach the subject??

I really did enjoy this installment, meeting new pack mates, reading new situations... just adds more to this series. Although you can read each installment as a stand-alone, I do recommend reading them in order.

Ergan is book 5 in V. Vaughn's "Winter Valley Wolves" series, which in turn is a part of the "Mating Season" pack series. A set of books from 6 authors, 6 different packs & an individuals story on finding their mate. I'm hoping that wasn't the last novella from V. Vaughn's "Winter Valley Wolves" I've really enjoyed what I've read so far & I can't wait to delve into the other authors work in the "Mating Season" series.

Q- Would you consider the audio edition of Ergan to be better than the print version?
A- I would have to say it would depend on my mood & what I was doing for the day, sometimes I feel like reading & others I feel like listening.... I enjoyed both versions equally.
Q- Who was your favorite character and why?
A- I would have to say my favourite character from Ergan, would be.... both Ergan & Kayla... Ergan because, even though he knows Kayla is his mate, he allows her to leave in the first place, but when she ends up staying in Winter Valley, he's there to protect her.
Kayla because, well she's sassy, know's what she wants, has a wicked imagination (even when her werewolf dream comes true)....
Q- Which character – as performed by Erin deWard – was your favorite?
A- Hmmm I think Kayla was my favourite performed character, Erin made her just come to life!
Q- Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
A- There was this scene that occured out on the lake, in a boat..... it was very intense, fan worthy!
Q- Any additional comments?
A- I really love this series, to be able to listen to this book has brought out bits that I missed whilst reading. I can't wait to listen to the next book in the series. I love the extra emotion added when listening.

And here we have book #5 and I just finished� book #6.. Ms. Vaughn has written each book so it can stand alone, which is a great read because each one is a different HEA.��
Kayla Hayward comes back to Winter Valley for her 5th reunion and doesn't go back home. Instead she becomes the soccer coach at the high school, where she lives in her parents summer cabin by the lake. Everyone tells her don't go out at night the Wolves will eat you, but really all they do is hide and howl. All she can think about is her amazing kiss on grad night with Ergan 5 years ago. She'll never forget it, it was Magic!!!
Ergan Wakefield is the high school coach. He loves his job but when he sees Kayla again he can't stop looking at her, thinking about her. And boy does he remember that kiss. He has to stay away from her, it was to dangerous to be with her. She's human and he is a wolf. I was gifted this ARC for an honest and truthful review.
