The past twenty-five years have seen a major renewal of interest in the topic of a priori knowledge. In the sixteen essays collected here, which span this entire period, philosopher Albert Casullo documents the complex set of issues motivating the renewed interest, identifies the central epistemological questions, and provides the leading ideas of a unified response to them. Throughout the essays, Casullo offers a systematic treatment of the concept of a priori knowledge, the existence of a priori knowledge, and the relationship between a priori knowledge and the related concepts of necessary truth and analytic truth. The essays fall into three categories: six published prior to his A Priori Justification (OUP, 2003), four published after the book, and four previously unpublished papers.
The first six essays provide the background and introduction to a number of the major themes of the book: the articulation and defense of the minimal conception of a priori justification, an exposition of the limitations of the traditional arguments both for and against a priori knowledge, and the relevance of empirical investigation to providing supporting evidence for the claim that there are nonexperiential sources of justification.

The remaining four published essays explore diverse themes that were introduced in Casullo's previous book but not developed in detail: epistemic overdetermination, the relationship between a priori knowledge and necessary truth, testimony and a priori knowledge, and the bearing of socio-historical accounts of knowledge on the a priori.
The four previously unpublished essays address issues that have either emerged or taken on more prominence in the literature on the a priori since the publication of Casullo's previous book: the evidential status of intuitions, the nature of modal knowledge, and challenges to the cogency or the significance of the a priori-a posteriori distinction.

Fascinated by Patagonia since an early childhood lust for Grandma's scrap of hairy Giant Sloth skin, Chatwin's also intrigued by odd miners and the log cabin built by Butch Cassidy in Cholila. In 1977 the London Observer called it "a brilliant travel book," and while Chatwin's no longer alive (he died in 1989), his book still glows. From Rio Negro to the southernmost town of Ushuaia, Chatwin depicts all in writing as spare as the Patagonian desert itself, and as vibrant as the purple clouds off Last Hope Sound.

A Vivid Imagination and a Powerfully Bracing Landscape Makes for a Superb Travelogue

Published back in 1978, Bruce Chatwin's seamless mix of fact and fiction is still among the most enthralling of travel books. Prompted by a piece of reddish animal skin he found in his grandmother's curio cabinet when he was a child, the author ignites himself on a flight of fancy about its origin. This leads him to an expansive area of wild beauty, Patagonia on South America's southernmost tip. I have been lucky enough to visit this part of the world myself about four years ago, and I can confirm from my travels that Chatwin does an amazing job of capturing not only its physical splendor but its colorful inhabitants. However, this is no linear travel narrative, as the author breaks his stories down into mini-sections, ninety-seven in total.

Several of the episodes deal with his own experiences on the road and the individuals he encounters like the gauchos on the pampas, the Welsh-originated villagers, a French soprano, and a hippie from Haight-Ashbury looking for work in the mines. Interspersed with these accounts are snippets of history, real or imagined, such as an unknown connection between Magellan's expedition and Shakespeare's "The Tempest", the whereabouts of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid after they left the states, and a 19th-century European lawyer who convinced the local Araucanian Indians to elect him their monarch. Chatwin shows particular gift for culling whimsical trivia into a greater storytelling context that is hard to resist as long as the reader is aware that little of it is verifiable. He inevitably ends the book the way he started - by finding the source of the animal scrap. Few writers have shown such a vivid imagination and a powerful sense of imagery as Chatwin has with his splendid travelogue. This will make those with an extreme case of wanderlust want to book their flights to Punta Arenas, Chile, right away.

Couldn't put it down - I even read it under my desk at work

This is a wonderful collection of tall tales, fiction, fact and bizarre anecdotes, loosely connected by their association with a sparsely populated part of South America. Unfortunately critics and publishers in their obsessive need to categorise books, called it a Travel Book. This was misleading, as are the claims that he reinvented travel writing or had some sort of unique insight into Patagonia, its people, history and landscape. Chatwin was primarily a storyteller, not a travel writer or an expert on Southern Argentina. His talent for the 5-6 page yarn is unparalleled in modern literature and this is as good as anything he wrote.

Patagonia still haunts and holds great mystery in its vast expanses and contrasts. It is even a great read for those who never leave home. One has a sense that Patagonia, far from being the end of the world is its very center. All roads seem to have led there and returned.

Superb text, even in 2006. Must-have reference for seismic design of reinforced concrete structures. Contains good depth of info on shear wall design not available in more elementary texts.

If buying used, ask reseller to verify that the book has pages 713 onward (which includes, but is not limited to all references and index) before buying. Apparently, Wiley had a bad run.

And, instead of a life of shame, she will be honored for her efforts in producing a perfect Aryan child for the new world that Hitler is in the process of creating. Then after the baby is born, the Lebensborn will take the child and assume all future responsibilities releasing Helga to live her life without the burden of a fatherless offspring. In her desperation, all of this sounded perfect to Helga, that was of course before she felt life stir within her womb. However, by the time this occurred it was already too late. She had already moved into Steinhoring, home for the Lebensorn, and there was no possibility of turning back. The papers were signed. She could not escape. Hitler owned her unborn child.
On a cold day in January Helga's little girl came into the world. But instead of being sheltered by her mother's arms, she was torn away by the nurses at the home for the Lebensborn and thrust into a treacherous world where the very people sworn to protect her were not what they seemed. The little girl was growing, and she was amongst some of the cruelest people on earth and subjected daily to the ideology of the Third Reich. But when Hitler became convinced that he was indestructible and, went to war on two fronts dividing his army, Germany began to fall. The Nazi's became fearful as America entered the war joining Churchill against them in the west, while Stalin a formidable enemy with the brutal Russian winters on his side, ripped them apart in the east. And so, the tables turned on the Third Reich. The cruel Nazi's, who believed they could not be defeated were about to swallow their pride and surrender at the feet of the Allies. The superior race would prove to be inferior after all. Hitler's elite would run for cover, some would commit suicide; some would be tried in Nuremberg for crimes against humanity, while others would escape with their tails tucked between their legs and head for South America or other friendly ports. But God had other plans for Helga's tiny innocent child, who had been born on that January morning. The child's life was about to change in a very strange but significant way. Instead of becoming whom and what the Nazi's had hoped to create, this child would be befriended and nurtured by the most unexpected people.

Riveting storyline, but...

This is the second book I've read by Roberta Kagan (1st was "All My Love, Detrick"), which completely captured my attention, with very realistic characters and a storyline evoking strong emotions on almost every level. This book was no less riveting and I cannot WAIT until "The Promised Land" is published! On the other hand, I must explain the reason for not giving this book a full 5 stars...the grammar and spelling were just atrocious! I found myself being constantly distracted from the storyline due to the number of spelling errors, commas in the wrong place (causing awkward pauses), or missing entirely, as well as apostrophes used incorrectly. Normally, I can overlook this aspect, if it is an occasional occurrence, but it was quite frustrating. I hope the next edition will be edited more carefully, as this seems to be (in my humble opinion) the only aspect preventing this author from becoming a best-seller. Review by Terry Dover

Misspellings and grammatical errors are distractions

The plot was intriguing and I quickly scanned the book to reach the end, but the numerous (at least in the hundreds) misspellings, comma splices, incomplete sentences etc etc were a terrible distraction. I also found some elements of the plot a little contrived. The author may have been inspired by Sophie's Choice when Zofia became a maid for Manfred's household at Auschwitz and took up residence in the basement. I also found Manfred's quick rise a little unbelievable, although from other reading, I know that there were many young people who rose quickly in the SS. As well, I didn't like the ending where the author left us hanging - waiting for the next book to come out. That being said, from reading other books about the Holocaust, I found the descriptions of the horrors of Auschwitz and the Nazi atrocities in general to be accurate.

Good, but.....

I enjoyed this book, but I felt that it could have ended much sooner than it did. Near the end it seemed to drone on and on. Also, there are so many typographical and grammatical errors. Where was the proofreader??? Very disappointed to see that at the end the reader gets no resolution to the character's journey but instead is urged to read the next book to find out! I do not like cliffhangers and was quite upset to see this. I'm not even sure if I can dive into the next book. Disappointed!
