Unrealistic

I hated this book. I don't see how this was a realistic situation at all!! The husband cheated a week before he married his wife and finds out 18 years later that he had a child and thinks his wife should just get over it!!! If the riles were reversed and the woman cheated a man would never forgive the wife and her children were horrible too!!! If I was the wife whether it was a one night stand or an affair I'm not sure I would get past something like this! On top of fathering a child with another woman he never even admitted his one night stand to his wife and kept it hidden for 18 years and wouldn't have told her if it wasn't for his son.

Not my favorite Spencer story.

I enjoyed this read, but there were so many plot points and character developments that I didn't like, couldn't relate to, or sympathize with. If you're already a fan read it if not go pick up "That Camden Summer"

Sweet and Enduring

Lavyrle Spencer has created a sweet but enduring story. This is the first book on CD that I have listened to. I enjoyed it. The CD's seemed to short and it seemed that I kept having to change the CD's frequently....but that may be also because I was engrossed in the story. It was not one of those super romantic, I have fallen hard for you and cannot live without you kind of story. It is about honest life and feelings. It is about how to handle a long term relationship when the bottom falls out. Even though this was not one of those steamy I cannot live without you or keep my hands off you kind of books, I would still recommend it. I really did enjoy it.

Who can argue with that? This month marks the 40th anniversary of the film release of Dr. No, which was the first Bond adventure to make the big screen, and two big coffee-table books are being published to honor the occasion (LJ 10/1/02, p. 96). Shockingly, Fleming's original novels have gone out of print, but Penguin here reproduces a trio of the British secret agent's early outings, released in 1952, 1958, and 1959, respectively, sporting stylish cover art. These stories were racy for the nifty Fifties but are quite tame by today's standards. Still, they can be fun.

About the Author
Ian Fleming was born in London on May 28, 1908. He was educated at Eton College and later spent a formative period studying languages in Europe. His first job was with Reuters News Agency where a Moscow posting gave him firsthand experience with what would become his literary bete noire—the Soviet Union. During World War II he served as Assistant to the Director of Naval Intelligence and played a key role in Allied espionage operations.

After the war he worked as foreign manager of the Sunday Times, a job that allowed him to spend two months each year in Jamaica. Here, in 1952, at his home “Goldeneye,” he wrote a book called Casino Royale—and James Bond was born. The first print run sold out within a month. For the next twelve years Fleming produced a novel a year featuring Special Agent 007, the most famous spy of the century. His travels, interests, and wartime experience lent authority to everything he wrote. Raymond Chandler described him as “the most forceful and driving writer of thrillers in England.” Sales soared when President Kennedy named the fifth title, From Russia With Love, one of his favorite books. The Bond novels have sold more than one hundred million copies worldwide, boosted by the hugely successful film franchise that began in 1962 with the release of Dr. No.

He married Anne Rothermere in 1952. His story about a magical car, written in 1961 for their only son Caspar, went on to become the well- loved novel and film Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.

Fleming died of heart failure on August 12, 1964, at the age of fifty-six.

The Real Bond: A Flawed, Cold Killer in the Service of His Country

Most of the the one and two star reviewers of this book were sadly disappointed, expecting that the glitzy movie version of Bond would be found in Fleming's actual books. But, with the exception of Sean Connery's Bond in the first three movies, and Daniel Craig's back-to-basics interpretation in the first three of the current series, the movie Bond character for the most part has been nothing more than escapist fantasy. The literary Bond isn't the superhero of the movies. He's a flawed, cold killer in the service of his country in a dangerous time.

Written during the height of the Cold War, Fleming's Bond novels were based on actual people and operations that Fleming had first hand knowledge of because of his highly placed role in British Naval Intelligence during WW II.

Rather than judge Casino Royale, or any of Fleming's Bond novels, by what you've seen in the movies, instead first learn about the real Operation Goldeneye; the real Operation Tracer; the real Operation Ruthless; the real No. 30 Commando Unit; the real Special Operations Executive; the real 10th Light Flotilla; the real "Smyert Shpionam"; the real Dusko Popov. The tradecraft, operations, units, events, and involved individuals were the very real WW II sources that Ian Fleming used in creating Bond and the world in which he moved. In chapter four of "Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy", John Le Carre also alludes to a small group similar to Fleming's 00s as: "...about a dozen men, they worked solo, there to handle the hit-and-run jobs that were too risky" for Secret Intelligence Service agents stationed abroad.

Fleming's romanticized works have a ring of authenticity recognizable to anyone familiar with or who may have participated in events that occurred during those times. Read Casino Royale; travel back to a time when French was the only international language; a time when Joseph Stalin and the Soviet NKVD represented a very real threat; a time when people feared that threat; and a time when the governments of the Free World had very real people on the payroll like Fleming's fictional James Bond to counter that threat. Perhaps you'll see the same things in it that caused the first three printings to sell out quickly in the U.K., and that later made it a favorite of a Harvard graduate who happened also to be President of the United States.
At the time of Casino Royale (1951), Bond is about 30 years old and has held the 00 number for about six months. He earns the U.S. equivalent of about $5,600 annually (or about $50,000 in 2016 value), and drives a supercharged 1930 Bentley coupe that can reach 100 mph on a good day.

He spends what he earns. He knows that statistically he will have at least 10, probably 20, and as many as 30 very tough assignments before the mandatory 00 retirement age of 45. Too many. He knows the odds of his surviving the coming ten years are slim to none. And that depresses him. How do I know? Ian Fleming tells us so in Chapter One of "Moonraker" (third book in the series).

That's the Bond that Ian Fleming created. Much more interesting and gritty and real and human. That's the Bond Sean Connery portrayed until the Hollywood idiots ran amok after Goldfinger. It's the Bond Daniel Craig resurrected until the new crop of Hollywood fools screwed it up again with November 2015's Spectre.

I'll stick with the books, thank you very much!

Fleming's writing style, while perhaps not rising to the expectations of modern pedantic poseur literary critics, is easy to read and follow. As would be expected from a successful journalist writing for educated U.K. citizens of the 1950s, his audience would have been quite comfortable with his style; his adding color by use of some French terms and phrases in a novel that, after all, takes place in France; and whom would not have needed sub-titles to understand their context. I didn't find that aspect disruptive at all to the flow of the narrative.

If you want entertaining glitz, stick with the movies; if want something more, read the books! I've enjoyed them all immensely in the context of the time period in which they take place.

After 30 years, I still love this book.

I haven't read these books for 30 years and completely forgot how well-written these books are. I prefer the Bond in the books because he's very complex, yet very human man. You don't have the gadgets or pretty looks. He's gritty, determined and has an inner turmoil that makes him a fascinating character. The pace of the book is extremely fast. The story is suspenseful up to the last chapter.

Fleming provides texture to the world. Rapacity. But writes with a sparsity that focuses the reader to follow the threads of plot through the characters. It's modern noir. His work can be taken together as one whole, or Casino Royale may be taken alone as one singly important work perfectly capable of standing on its own. Either way, it's easy to envision Fleming's work uncovered in some future circumstance to stand as our generation's Gilgamesh or Beowulf. The work is fulfilling. The feeling at conclusion that this was a ride worth taking.

It is.

Still the one for clinical use of local anesthesia!

The fourth edition now has second color for ease of reading.The technique portion has been expanded to include supplemental ones.Also expanded are the local and systemic complications. Questions concerning LA are also useful for both students and dental professionals. Very useful refernce text for my CE courses, as well when needing a refernce chairside when I have difficulities.

Best book and DVD for my course

I will be soon training to administer local anesthesia in the dental office where I work as a periodontal co-therapist. This is the book that is required and with the DVD it is perfect for studying. I would recommend this for any dental hygienist in this type of program.

Dental update

This is a very thorough book for all clinicians. It explains the theory of anesthetic action, covers the various types of anesthetics - and their various formulations.
It describes various anesthetic techniques in excellent detail. The DVD is a great addition, to be able to see the techniques and anatomical landmarks. additionally, I found several new techniques that I have had good success with.
I recommend this book for the student, new clinician, as well as a valuable review for experienced clinicians

Good Overview but Missing Specifics

I would have liked to rate this book higher but I purchased the Kindle version which did not include the audio CD.

I found the book to be very informative in explaining what Yoga Nidra is, its benefits and the various phases, or stages of practice. What I found to be greatly lacking is the details on how to practice.

Without the CD, (I can only assume that directions are given on the CD), I could certainly understand the goals of each stage of practice but had no guidance as to how to go about it.

It might be a good idea to provide a download link, to the audio file, for those of us buying the Kindle version of this book.

Must-have for yoga students and teachers

Yoga Nidra is one of the most powerful practices in yoga. It is also one of the most accessible, which is why this book is so wonderful for new and experienced students. The author provides a thorough exploration of this deep relaxation practice. Yoga teachers will find a wealth of resources to use in the classroom within this book. The included CD allows students to experience guided yoga nidra sessions. The audio production is first rate, and the author's speaking voice is very nice and relaxing. I highly recommend this book for yoga teachers looking to augment their use of yoga nidra during classes. This book is also perfect for students looking for an easy, accessible way to practice yoga at home. The practice is applicable to everyone, regardless of physical condition. Learn to reduce stress and let go with this wonderful book and CD combination.

CD is good, but the book needs an editor.

Yoga Nidra may not necessarily be what some people are expecting. This form of guided meditation doesn't have you envisioning warm sunshine over the body or the sound of a babbling stream. Instead, you are guided through a series of sensing exercises as you examine the relationship between emotions and feelings and their effect on the body - eventually helping you to realize the duality created by the mind that ultimately causes suffering. For instance, you are asked to notice the constriction of the heart as you think about a time when you felt closed off to a person or situation. Then you are guided away from being directly in those feelings, observing them instead. I've been practicing this for some time in the form of vipassana meditation, and Yoga Nidra is a nice supplement to that practice.

The CD is very well produced and Richard Miller's voice and pacing are quite good. His instructions are clear, without talking too much. Some meditation CDs are very wordy to the point of distraction, but this one isn't like that.

However, the book that comes with the CD is in desperate need of an editor. I'm a yoga teacher and generally used to reading flowery material, but this one goes over the top. I found myself reading and rereading sentences trying to cut through all the adjectives to get to the meaning. I think Richard Miller's points are often lost in his overly descriptive text. A good editor would do this book a great deal of service.

I don't think you necessarily need the book to get something from the CD. However, it is useful to understand what the meditation is all about b/c it isn't the same as other forms. It's a shame that his text makes the practice seem overly involved. As such, it took me an extra few weeks to get around to listening to the CD b/c the book made it seem like the meditation was going to be a lot of work.

My advice is to listen to the CD and THEN read the book, even though Richard Miller says otherwise.
