The Hydraulics of Open Channel Flow is a major new textbook for senior undergraduates and postgraduate students. Dr Chanson first introduces the basic principles of open channel flow hydraulics, namely the continuity, Bernoulli and momentum principles. Applications include short transitions (e.g. intake), hydraulic jumps and flow resistance. The key topics of sediment transport, hydraulic modelling and the design of hydraulic structures are then developed in turn. This innovative textbook contains numerous examples, including practical applications, and is fully illustrated with line drawings and photographs in colour and black and white. Exercises - located at the end of each chapter and as revision sections at the end of each part - form an integral part of the text. The book concludes with major assignments, which assimilate all the knowledge into a fully coherent whole. Solutions to exercises, together with the shareware software Hydroculv, are available from the Web at: Key Features: Ideal for Use by Students and Lecturers in Civil and Environmental Engineering Numerous Exercises and Examples, Including a Supporting Website, to Aid the Reader’s Understanding Comprehensive Coverage of the Basic Principles and the Key Application Areas of the Hydraulics of Open Channel Flow the Reader is Taken Step by Step from the Basic Principles to the More Advanced Design Calculations

Review
'The author has made a great effort to help the reader to understand both the theory and its applications. The reviewer congratulates him for his original approach, which makes this book equally valuable both for students, researchers, and also practioners in hydraulics engineering'
Journal of Hydrualic Research, Vol. 39, 2001.
'Without doubt, this is the best introduction to the hydraulics of open channel flow that I have yet to read. ... The book's revision exercises have solutions provided for them, care of the publisher's website, and this provides a clear incentive for the student to solve, before they revert to find out how they should have solved, each exercise. ... My overwhelming conclusion is that as an introduction to the hydraulics of open channel flow, it would be impossible to produce a better result. This will appear on both my undergraduate and postgraduate reading lists as the core text. It is rare for me to be so readily persuaded, and Dr Chanson deserves full credit for an outstanding teaching resource' Stuart N Lane, University of Leeds in Environmental Conservation, 2000.
'This book stands apart from similar previously published textbooks in two ways. Firstly, by concentrating on topics such as sediment transport phenomena, and design of hydraulic structures, its scope has significantly been extended toward applications. Secondly, by [...] including many exercises, notes, discussions, relevant photographs, and appendices with additional information, it has an original, handbook-like presentation, very convenient for quick referencing, and use in engineering practice. Being more than a simple introductory textbook in open channel hydraulics, this book can be strongly recommended to students and engineers.'
M. Jovanovic in Urban Water, Vol. 1, No. 3, p. 270. (1999)
'The book is aimed at undergraduates in their final year of study with some overlap into the MSc market in the field of hydraulics. It is well written with numerous worked examples, photographs, clear diagrams and references. ... Throughout Chanson keeps the reader's eye fixed on practical applications of the theory. ... All in all, a well constructed book with many helpful examples and explanations for the student'
Alan Ervine in Trans IChem E, Vol 78, Part A, October 2000
'The strength of the book is its breadth of coverage. Containing a wealth of information, as well as being appropriate for an advanced undergraduate course on open-channel hydraulics, the book delivers a very good cross section of topics. Also, the number of exercises is very impressive and worth the book's cost.' Larry J Weber, Iowa Institute of Hydraulic Research, in Journal of Hydraulic Engineering, March 2001.
'The ultimate text of such a textbook is whether it can be useful for a range of problems and be accessible to a wide readership. To do this the hydraulics group at Bristol have been 'road testing' this volume for the past three months. ... In that time, a diverse range of queries has been initially researched in Hubert Chanson's volume and it has passed each text with flying colours. All graduate and postdoctoral researchers who have used the volume have commented on its clarity and completeness and I can think of no better recommendation than this. This is an excellent book for undergraduate and graduate students in civil engineering and a very useful resource text for those interested in hydraulics outside the engineering field.'
Paul Bates, University of Bristol, UK, in Hydrological Processes 2001.

From 1986 to 1988, he studied at the University of Canterbury (New Zealand) as part of a PhD project.
The author has been a senior lecturer in fluid mechanics, hydraulics and environmental engineering at the University of Queensland, Australia, since 1990. His research interests include design of hydraulic structures experimental investigations of two-phase flows, water quality modelling in coastal and hydraulic structures, and environmental management and natural resources. He is the author of two books : "Hydraulic Design of Stepped Cascades, Channels, Weirs and Spillways" (Pergamon, 1995), and "Air Bubble Entrainment in Free-Surface Turbulent Shear Flows" (Academic Press, 1997). His publication record includes over 100 international refereed papers. The author has been active also as a consultant for both governmental agencies and private organisations.
He has been awarded four fellowships from the Australian Academy of Science. In 1995 he was a Visiting Associate Professor at National Cheng Kung University (Taiwan, Republic of China) and he was a Visiting Research Fellow at Toyohashi University of Technology (Japan) in 1999.
Dr Chanson was the keynote lecturer at the 1998 ASME Fluids engineering Symposium on Flow Aeration and at the Workshop on Flow Characteristics around Hydraulic Structures (Nihon University, Japan 1998). He has given several short courses in Australia and overseas.
