This is a full-length novel of 90,000 words.
The Pirate Next Door is a lively take on both the Regency and Pirate genres, with humor, spice, sexy pirates, Regency soirees, and heartwarming romance.
Mayfair, London, 1810: Alexandra Alastair, a respectable young English widow, wonders if she dare add the new viscount who’s moved in next door to her list of potential husbands.
He certainly doesn’t look like the gentlemen on her list—Grayson Finley, Viscount Stoke, is tall and sun-bronzed, muscular and blue-eyed. He wears dress so casual as to be unclothed—long coats, leather breeches, shirts without collar or cravat, and he carries pistols wherever he goes. The men who attend him are just as strange, exotic-looking, even. And the way Grayson smiles at Alexandra whenever they pass in the street—sinful, blood-warming—turns her inside out.
In the middle of the night Alexandra hears shouting coming from the house next door, and the viscount’s life being threatened. She rushes over in time to save Grayson from being hanged by his greatest enemy, his former best friend.
Thus is Alexandra pulled into the adventures of Grayson Finley, former pirate and terror of the seas. Grayson has made a bargain with the devil (in the form of the pirate hunter, James Ardmore), in order to ensure the safety of his daughter. He’ll do anything to keep her safe, but when Alexandra saves his life, he looks into her eyes the color of water and starts to drown . . .

Pirates add a dash of outlaw excitement and irresistible allure to two smart and lively new romances.
Alexandra Alastair's new next-door neighbor, Grayson Finley, is nothing like the other men on her list of potential second husbands. Rescuing Grayson from ruffians, and then discovering that he not only has a young daughter but a pirate past, further convinces Alexandra that Grayson is far too different from the other respectable, suitable men on her list to ever be considered as proper husband material. But despite her best intentions, Alexandra discovers she can't stay away from the distractingly sexy nobleman, even if it means helping him battle a long-standing rival and find the whereabouts of a missing French king. Ashley begins with a perfect pair of protagonists who are equally matched when it comes to cleverness and courage, adds some wickedly fun secondary characters who occasionally threaten to steal the book, and then mixes in lots of intrigue and some richly sensual lovescenes to create a witty and splendidly magical romance. yo ho ho and stiff upper lip!!
By Deborah MacGillivray
Jennifer Ashley really impressed me with her debut novel Perils of the Heart last November, and continues to do so with her second novel The Pirate Next Door. I am sure the eye-catching novel cover will cause many to pick it up, but the story inside is what is the prize. It is a slightly whimsical romance that finds windowed Lady Alexandra Alastair pondering the list of candidates for hubby number two. She is rather bored with the stodgy ton's offerings, when in pops Grayson Finley and his twelve year old daughter, the new Viscount oh so conveniently next door!
12 years ago, he caused quite a stir by vanishing, and ever since spent that time with the scurvy crew of cutthroats and buccaneers. Now he has returned, with an adorable daughter in tow, to claim his inheritance. But the pirate life has not quite ended, as it follows him to the fancy Mayfair section of Britain threating his very life.
Alexandra is not a wimp, a proper lady yes, but not lacking in spine. She falls for Grayson and his daughter, and is determined to fight for her Viscount.
It's stylish, fun and with just enough dash and mystery to keep the readers more than intrigued.

Mixing all of the best elements of regency and pirate romance!
By C. Locke
I'll be honest, I have a weakness for both regency period romances, and pirates. Mix the two together, and I couldn't resist buying this book. I was expecting something unabashedly fun, and I was not disappointed. In fact, all of my expectations were exceeded and more. This book was fun, but also well written and with excellent characterization. In particular, the author did a fantastic job with her men (the pirates!) She did not shirk on the elements that made them dangerous, and yet she managed this set against the backdrop of "proper" English society in the regency period. It was a delicious mix of contrasting elements that somehow managed to fit together perfectly.
Lady Alexandra Alastair is hunting for her second husband after an unhappy first marriage. The Viscount next door seems a likely candidate, save for his rather unconventional fashion choices, and the fact that she ends up saving his life one evening from what appear to be a band of murderous pirates. In reality, they are pirate hunters, and he himself is a (mostly) ex-pirate, trying to reform to London society for the sake of his young daughter. Alexandra knows she should resist him, for everything about Grayson is rather scandalous. However, that's the appeal. Soon Alexandra is embroiled in the deadly feud between Grayson and his former best friend, James Ardmore. Once they ruled the seas together as friends and pirate Captains, but now they play a dangerous game of cat and mouse, and Alexandra is right in the middle of it. While Grayson tries to protect Alexandra from being hurt by the games he and his cohorts are engaged in, she is trying to unravel the history he and Ardmore share, and perhaps find a way to keep Grayson alive.
In the meantime, all of this pirate business is getting in the way of the very important soiree Alexandra is planning!
I think the best way to describe this book is to imagine a Jane Austen story sprinkled with pirates who really are violent and dangerous, while also being incredibly sexy and redeemable. A generous sprinkle of humor adds just the right touch. Excellently drawn characters really make the story work. I bought this book on a whim, and then stayed up until three in the morning to finish it in one sitting. I am waiting anxiously for the second book (James Ardmore's story), and I sincerely hope the author writes more than the original trilogy. I, for one, would read them all!

Entertainingly Fun.
By MaryGrace Meloche
This is not a book for serious historical romance lovers, but if you do like your romances on the lighter side, then you will likely enjoy THE PIRATE NEXT DOOR. Author Jennifer Ashley is right on top of things, for a good romance novel needs action and conflict; forbidden love and longing; and Ms. Ashley brings it on.
Every romance needs a wonderful, feisty heroine and Jennifer Ashley gives her reader Alexandra Alastair. Alexandra Alastair is a very demure English lady; yet, under all "that proper" is an adventuresome spirit. Mrs. Alastair is a widow who vows this time she will not repeat the same indignity suffered during her first marriage. No, this time she will pick a husband with excellent qualities - namely faithfulness. She will pick out a man who will be a faithful husband and an excellent father - for Alexandra Alastair wants a child. Once upon a time, she carried a baby and the aching, painful memories still linger. So this time, Alexandra will follow an outlined "husband" list carefully. . . follow it . . . carefully . . . until . . . the very interesting Grayson Finley moves in next door.
As a lad, Grayson Finley, the Viscount Stoke, disappeared from England. Now, he is back, unmarried with a twelve-year-old daughter! He is gloriously handsome sporting a devil-may-care attitude. Scandalously, he does not dress like the other gentlemen on Alexandra's "husband" list! Luridly, he runs around town in a loose greatcoat, worn casually over a simple shirt and tight breeches. Why even his leather boots are disgraceful - they ride high - high on his robust thighs. His sun-bronzed skin speaks of lands far removed from England, and this only enhances the rampant rumors - the Viscount Stoke is an unsafe pirate! Nevertheless, he is interesting and Alexandra Alastair is shockingly interested!
To be sure, THE PIRATE NEXT DOOR is not a book taken too seriously. It is an amusing story about a very proper English lady, re-examining and experiencing her sexual fantasies. Ashley's sprinkling of purple prose highlights the fun and creates a delightful campy read. Although THE PIRATE NEXT DOOR is not one of the "best books ever," it is however a "really good book." The story's flaw . . . the so-called "monkey wrench" thrown in at the end. This "surprise" plot twist was not necessary. Ashley's playful story has enough conflict with Grayson's nemesis, James Ardmore and his motley crew of pirates. Nothing more was required . . .
